A BABY boy has died following an accident in his cot.
Shane Bland, aged six months, is believed to have become trapped between the mattress and the bars of his cot.
Shane was discovered unconscious by his parents at their home in Byker, Newcastle. He was taken to Newcastle General Hospital's intensive care unit, where he was put on a life support machine.
But the baby died on Thursday afternoon with his mother and father at his beside.
Police launched an inquiry into the circumstances of Shane's death, but are not treating it as suspicious following an initial investigation.
Paramedics were called to the house on Wednesday lunchtime. The baby was revived and placed on a ventilator at the hospital, receiving 24-hour care.
Home Office pathologist Dr James Sunter has prepared a report and an inquest will be opened.
