WEEKEND sunshine brought a record 5,000 crowd to Shildon Carnival, which organisers say was the most successful yet.
Residents lined the streets for a parades of floats, which was reduced in number because of safety considerations.
Traders added to the atmosphere by providing sweets for the crowds, who were entertained by the Jubilee Jazz Band.
Regulars at the Fox and Hounds pub won the float competition with a South Pacific display. Eldon Lane Primary School were placed second with a South African theme, while staff from the Asda store in Bishop Auckland took third place with a barbecue scene.
Judges in the fancy dress competition were so impressed with the turn out from children at St John's Primary School, in Shildon, that instead of choosing just one winner they awarded the school a £50 donation.
Parade organiser and Shildon Chamber of Trade secretary John Bowman said: "It was a brilliant day. We had a wonderful turnout and there was a fantastic atmosphere.
"I have to pay special tribute to the Jubilee Jazz Band."
