A YEAR after his life was changed for ever, a Stockton triathlete has thanked the college that is helping him realise his dreams.
Darron Shields was out training on his bike when an accident left him paralysed and in need of a wheelchair.
But the 34-year-old has bounced back and returned to college to do an access course to get him into university where he hopes to study sports science.
Mr Shields, a former floor fitter who lives with his wife, Paula, in Stockton, still wants to work with promising athletes and has not shelved plans to move to Australia as soon as he can.
In paying tribute to tutors at Stockton Riverside College, he said: "It is these people who have got me through by being available, helpful and reassuring, which has built my confidence.
"Everyone has been so supportive that I can't thank them enough. I was very nervous about coming back because I have been out of education for so long, but the college has made it very easy."
Last month, Mr Shields won an adult learning development award for his efforts after being nominated by tutor Kath Storey.
He has one exam left and one more piece of course work to do and if he successfully completes his access course, he will study sports science at the University of Teesside in September.
Kevin Hogg, of Stockton Riverside College, said: "It just shows his outstanding dedication to achieve as much as he has in such a short period of time. It is amazing.
