A LOCAL authority has been recognised with an award for boosting business.
South Tyneside Borough Council has won the 2002 to 2003 Best for Business Award from the North-East Chamber of Commerce.
It was one of four local authorities short-listed for the honour, for which nominations are made by representatives from the chamber's five area offices.
The award recognises the support councils provide to businesses in their area, and each nominee underwent a mystery shopper telephone survey, which tested their responses and skills relating to business development and support services.
South Tyneside emerged as the winner after impressing judges with the comprehensive and accurate range of support it provides to businesses across the borough.
George Cowcher, chief executive of the North-East Chamber of Commerce, said: "A multitude of support and advisory services exist to help companies from all sectors grow their business, but unless they are aware of these opportunities, progress will always be limited.
"When local authorities are approached for advice, it's vital they can provide accurate and relevant information.
South Tyneside's Mayor, Linda Waggott, said: "We're very proud of our links with local businesses and this proves we're a council whose business relations are moving forward."
