HUNDREDS of pensioners have taken up a free smoke alarm offer under a local authority scheme.
Easington District Council's community-based Handyman project aims to reduce falls and admissions to hospital, and promote independent living among older people.
Funded by the council and Easington Primary Care Trust, it is managed through the council's warden services.
Since last December, the handymen have completed hundreds of jobs in their accident prevention role.
Among their most successful initiatives has been to fit 634 smoke alarms in elderly people's accommodation.
Any elderly person who would like more information, is asked to ring (0191) 5270501, extension 2341 or 2550
