POLICE have released an e-fit likeness of a man they are seeking in connection with the theft of a pensioner's life savings.
As reported in The Northern Echo on Saturday, the Darlington woman was robbed of thousands of pounds after three bogus callers tricked their way into her home.
The man is said to be aged about 35, with ginger hair. He spoke with an Irish accent, and said he was a water company official and needed access to the woman's house.
While the pensioner was distracted, it is believed two other men searched the house and stole the money.
The theft happened at 1.30pm last Thursday. Police are eager to speak to anyone who saw the man or his accomplices
The man, who spoke to the pensioner, was wearing a white shirt, light brown trousers and grey gloves.
A week before the theft, Northumbria Water wrote to people in the West Auckland Road area explaining that their water would be turned off for a time while essential maintenance was carried out.
The letters stressed that no-one would call and no workers would need to gain access.
Detective Constable Angela Robinson said: "We would urge anyone who knows these men or has been approached by them to get in touch. If anyone is suspicious about a caller they should ring the police and make sure they do not let the person in. A genuine official will not mind waiting while their identity is checked."
Anyone with information is asked to call (01325) 742111.
