MORE than 200 young people will take part in a Geordie version of the Olympics this week.
The Geordie Games will be held with the emphasis on fun at Oliver Henderson Park, in Leam Lane, Gateshead, on Friday.
As well as traditional sports-day favourites such as the three-legged and egg-and-spoon races, the youngsters, aged ten to 11, will also get the chance to hoy the welly, and take part in the little-known but ancient Geordie sports of the stotty discus and the rolling-pin relay.
The games, which have been organised by Leam Lane's Sure Start scheme, were the idea of neighbourhood warden Charlie Medcalf.
The games have been supported by a number of organisations, including Northumbria Police, Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade, Beamish Museum and Home Housing.
