THE drive to recycle household waste is spreading across the North-East.
Only days after three district councils in County Durham launched a Kerb-it rubbish recycling scheme, delivery of collection boxes began in Sunderland.
People living in the area are being urged to put cans, waste paper and glass in the boxes, which will be collected from the kerbside on alternate weeks.
Items will then be deposited in collection wagon, where they will be sorted into categories, for white, green and brown glass, cans and paper.
About 7,500 households in the Silksworth, Tunstall and Ryhope areas are the first to receive their Kerb-it recycling boxes in the Sunderland City Council area this week.
By the end of the year every household in the city will be included in the programme, which is being overseen by Premier Waste Management, of Aykley Heads, Durham
