BOXING: Audley Harrison has been fined twice as much as Herbie Hide following the disturbances which followed Harrison's defeat of Mathew Ellis last month.
The British Boxing Board of Control yesterday fined the Olympic gold medallist £1,000 for his part in the shameful scenes following his 11th straight professional win at Bethnal Green's York Hall on May 31. He was also ordered to pay £600 costs.
The promoter of the bout, Jess Harding, was given the same punishment, while Hide was fined £500 with £300 costs following today's disciplinary inquiry.
Hide had been invited to sit ringside by the BBC.
RUGBY UNION: Australia's emergency fly-half Nathan Grey yesterday admitted it will take the energies of the entire Wallaby side to shut down England's Jonny Wilkinson, his opposite number in Saturday's Test in Melbourne. Grey has stepped into the breach after Australia lost their only fit, Test-class fly-half Elton Flatley when the Queenslander overslept and missed a team recovery session following the victory over Wales last weekend.
Flatley was told to hot-foot it back to Brisbane for breaking the team code of conduct, but it left coach Eddie Jones with a quandary, with Stephen Larkham and Matt Giteau out injured, only inside centre Grey and winger Joe Roff were his back-ups.
Jones opted for Grey, whose experience in the role is limited but more than Roff's, and the New South Welshman's first task will be up against Wilkinson, the finest number ten in world rugby.
BOXING: Lennox Lewis believes he is the last of the great heavyweight boxers and plans on taking his final bow in the ring in true champion's style. Lewis defends his World Boxing Council title against Ukraine's Vitali Klitschko in Los Angeles on Saturday night but is already looking at a swansong showdown with Roy Jones Jnr later this year.
ATHLETICS: Rookie high hurdler Andy Turner, who runs for Great Britain in this weekend's Spar European Cup final, might be on the dole - but a unique underwear sponsorship deal is enhancing his career. With world 110metres hurdles record holder Colin Jackson now retired, 22-year-old Turner is the first young pretender to emerge to takeover the crown.
His family own three underwear shops in the East Midlands and Turner revealed: ''Without support from dad and mum, I would have had to give up athletics. They make sure I can pay my basic bills.''
MOTORSPORT: World Rally Championship leader Richard Burns is preparing for a Ford onslaught at this week's Rally of Cyprus. The Englishman goes into the event, which starts tonight with a ceremonial first stage, holding a five-point lead at the top of the standings.
Golf: Colin Montgomerie plays his last tournament as a thirty-something this week - just as 20-year-old Zane Scotland arrives as the new kid on the European Tour block.
Montgomerie is 40 next Monday and can think of no better way to usher it in than with his first victory of the season in the Diageo Championship at Gleneagles on Sunday.
Scotland, meanwhile, plays his first-ever professional tournament after deciding not to wait for September's Walker Cup match against the United States.
OLYMPIC GAMES: Matthew Pinsent yesterday claimed that the American businesswoman appointed to lead London's Olympic hopes will prevent the bid being damaged by traditional British reserve.
Barbara Cassani, 42, was unveiled yesterday as chairman of the bid committee for 2012 and Olympic rower Pinsent, winner of three gold medals, insisted her nationality would have no influence.
Cassani, a forceful business figure who made a fortune by transforming and then selling the budget airline Go, is expected to have Charles Allen, the chairman of Granada and the chairman of the company that delivered last year's hugely successful Commonwealth Games in Manchester, as her deputy.
