YOUNG athletes from a Darlington school have qualified for regional and national athletics finals this year.

The athletics team from Carmel Technology College went through to the Northern regional finals of the National Schools Athletic cup by winning the North-East area round last month.

The junior girls' team, which won their competition, have become the first Darlington team to qualify for the national junior finals, to be held in Southampton in July.

They will compete against 11 other schools for the national championships.

The boys teams also finished third in the North-East junior boys section and fourth in the intermediate section.

Eve Hannaford, head of PE, said: "We are very proud of the winning teams and all the other Carmel athletes who performed so well. I am sure they will do their best in the final."
