A DICTIONARY created to help children learn sign language is to be used as part of an internationally-renowned learning pack.
Cleveland Sign Resource Project, at Middlesbrough's Beverley School, has been using the Children's Sign Dictionary for many years to help deaf and hearing youngsters learn sign language. Now the American company that produced Sign With Your Baby, a pack designed to teach hearing adults and children to sign, is to use the book.
"It is a great achievement for all the work that has been put in over the years," said illustrator David Hodgson, who has been working in special education with Middlesbrough Council for 19 years.
He said: "It is very gratifying that the book has gained so much respect and this just proves it.
"We are honoured that they have an interest and I feel privileged to have worked on this project."
The Children's Sign Dictionary contains more than 500 illustrations and can also be used as a colouring book.
Orders for the dictionary, which Mr Hodgson produced with Steven Goodman's help, have started arriving and output is expected to double to nearly 6,000 copies a year.
