The RSPCA is urging businesses to ensure that spikes and wire devices used to deter pigeons from nesting on their window ledges are in good condition.
The appeal follows the death of a pigeon which became entangled in loose wire on the third floor of Yates's Wine Lodge, in Grainger Street, Newcastle.
The bird had fought for four hours to free itself, but only succeeded in mangling its wing.
It was still alive but in terrible pain when Inspector Sue Craig managed to release it, with the help of firefighters.
Insp Craig said: "Because the wire, which was threaded through eyes in upright metal stakes, had worked its way loose, the bird had become trapped.
"We had to call in the fire brigade because the window did not open. They removed the window and frame and I was able to reach the bird.
"Yates's were also very helpful when they realised the problem, but ultimately we had to put the bird to sleep.
"I just want to urge other businesses that use a similar device to have a quick check and ensure the wire is taut and well maintained."
