A teenage girl escaped an abduction bid after breaking free from a would-be kidnapper in a daylight struggle on an industrial estate.

Police have appealed for information from witnesses to the incident, near the Barbour factory on the Bede Industrial Estate, in Jarrow, South Tyneside, yesterday morning.

The teenager, from South Tyneside, was walking past the corner of the factory, on Monksway, at around 8am when she was grabbed from behind by a man.

He tried to drag her towards a car parked at the Barbour factory, but she managed to struggle and break free, before running away.

Although she was not injured in the incident, police said the victim was extremely shaken as a result.

She described the man as white, aged around 50, between 5ft 8 and 10, medium build, with grey and white hair and a darker moustache, also greying.

The car was said to be long, dark red and believed to have four doors.

Witnesses, or anyone who recognises the description of the man, are asked to ring South Tyneside area command of Northumbria Police, on 0191454 7555, extension 65059.
