A PAINTING by Victorian artist Atkinson Grimshaw has sold for £242,000 - a record for an artwork sold in the North-East.
The painting, Autumn Gold, was bought by a North-East collector at an auction at Anderson and Garland, in Newcastle.
Collectables expert John Anderson said: "It exceeded all expectations. I expected it to realise about £150,000 at the most.
"The painting was bought by a determined bidder from the North-East who beat off competition from London dealers.
"He was keen that the painting should remain in the region."
The work was discovered among the effects of a Newcastle man who died recently.
A collection of posters by Newcastle-born artist John Gilroy promoting Guinness realised more than £3,000.
