FAMILIES had fun travelling back in time at the weekend.
Axholmr, a Celtic re-enactment group, put on a display of 5th Century combat at an archaeology fun day at the Summerhill site, in Hartlepool.
There were demonstrations of Roman firepower, with a working replica of a Roman catapult capable of firing projectiles more than a mile.
The high point of the day were tours of an archaeological dig on the site, which has unearthed the remains of a Roman building.
A number of important Romano-British finds have been made on the 100-acre site over the years.
Landscape interpretation officer Jenny Phillips said: "The whole emphasis was on fun, but the open day also had a lot of educational value and there were opportunities for people, both young and old, to learn more about the past and, more specifically, the history of the Summerhill site."
