POLICE handcuffed a man to the railings of a bridge to prevent him jumping to his death.
He had climbed on the parapets of the Valley Bridge, in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, past fencing put up ten years ago to deter suicides.
Acting Sergeant Martyn Tinker said firefighters used a ladder from Valley Road to reach the man 80ft above, and used a harness to attach him to the ladder.
He said: "He was assessed by medical experts and released into medical care."
The bridge has claimed more than 50 lives in the past 30 years. The fencing was erected after a man fell to his death with his two-year-old daughter a decade ago.
