Taking over the headship of Darlington's Polam Hall School is a task that Bolton-born Marie Green is planning to tackle with huge enthusiasm and an impressive track record.
She succeeds Helen Hamilton, who died in April, after 20 years at the school.
Miss Green, who is head of the English department at Witherington Girls' School, in Manchester, will take up the post in January.
A few visits to Darlington have left Miss Green in no doubt about the reputation of Polam Hall.
"I am enormously excited about the idea of heading a school with as proud a history as Polam," she said.
"I have been made fully aware of the history and I feel so privileged to have the chance to play a part in its future."
Her 26 years of experience at independent schools, mainly in the Manchester area, will serve her well.
Miss Green is confident that the switch from the North-West to the North-East is one she can take in her stride.
"It is very much a new venture for me, but on my visits to Darlington the friendliness of the people has really shown. It is a lovely town and has such a beautiful surrounding area," she said.
Governors believe Miss Green will be a major asset to Polam and she is keenly aware of the achievements of her predecessor.
"Everyone here speaks with enormous affection for Helen and the school has had a very difficult time," she said.
"There are many challenges in education at the moment, but it is exciting to have the opportunities to make a difference."
