Anyone considering a career in caring is welcome at recruitment days in Ryedale next week.

North Yorkshire County Council staff will be available to chat about the challenges and rewards of the profession, between 10am and 4pm on Thursday, July 3, at Pickering Memorial Hall, and between the same times on Friday, July 4, at the Community House, in Wentworth Street, Malton.

OPEN GATES: A gardens open day, plus a scarecrow trail competition, will be held at Newsham, between Richmond and Barnard Castle, on Sunday, from 1pm to 6pm. Tickets, costing £3 for the gardens (children free) and £1 for scarecrow trail clues, are available from the village hall.

MEETING DATE: The Richmond branch of the Alzheimer's Disease Society will hold its annual meeting at the town's Ryders Court at 7pm on Tuesday, July 15. The guest speaker will be Dr Chris Simpson, consultant psychiatrist at the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.

OPEN EVENING: Scruton Pre-School Group, which incorporates the Headstart nursery, is holding an open evening at Ainderby Steeple Village Hall tomorrow. The informal meeting gives parents the opportunity to find out more about business. Guests are welcome from 7.30pm

SWEET TALKER: Joyce Yates from Billington's of Liverpool, which manufactures unrefined sugar, will be speaking at the Richmond Methodist Church Hall tomorrow. The talk, titled Sugar and Spice, starts at 7.30pm.

PARTS STOLEN: Thieves stole parts from a BMW car parked in Bolton-on-Swale over the weekend. The wheels, lights and radiator were taken from the 5 Series saloon.

CAR MISSING: A Vauxhall Astra has been stolen from Richmond's Bargate. It was left at about 4pm on Sunday and was reported stolen at 1.25am on Monday.
