A TEAM of firefighters are attempting a gruelling mountain challenge to raise money for charity.
The team, from Darlington Fire Station's green watch, set off for the Three Peaks Challenge last night.
The team of five, supported by two drivers, plan to run up Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, in the fastest time possible.
The annual competition challenges teams to complete the run in under 24 hours, but the Darlington firemen are aiming much higher.
Team member Malcolm Woodward said: "We are supposed to do it in sub-24 hours, but we are aiming to do it in around 17 hours and win the challenge.
"The lads have been out training hard and we have been doing runs over the tops at Teesdale to get ready for this. We are all looking forward to it."
The team is being sponsored by Teesside firm John Morfield, which has provided T-shirts and a minibus for the challenge.
They hope to raise hundreds of pounds from the challenge. The money will be divided between the fire service's benevolent fund and the Butterwick Hospice.
