A SOLDIER from the region has taken to the water in a national canoe competition.
Lance Corporal Peter Bale, from Darlington, was one of 60 soldiers to take part in the Army's Land Command Canoe Slalom championships, in Wales.
L Cpl Bale, 23, from the Queen's Royal Lancers Regiment, said: "I only started canoeing in September last year, so I haven't had as much experience as most in the competition.
"I had the opportunity to start paddling when I was serving in Germany. I enjoy sport so I jumped at the chance. Now I want to improve and get in the Army team."
L Cpl Bale attended Longfield Comprehensive School before joining the Army in 1997.
He was not placed among the winners in the competition, but hopes to try again next year.
