ELECTRICAL goods firm Dixons has announced plans to create 2,200 jobs next year - months after signalling 350 head office staff were to go.

The news came as mobile phone retailer Vodafone said it was to axe 480 jobs at a site in Swindon.

The group bought Cellular Operations, which handles billing and other customer service functions, in March, promising it would be business as usual.

But Vodafone said yesterday that it had carried out an extensive review of the business and had decided to integrate it within its existing structure.

The Dixons' jobs announcement will bring fresh opportunities to the region. The company said 100 posts would be created at outlets across the North-East and a further 50 in Yorkshire.

Dixons, which also owns the Currys, PC World and The Link chains, made underlying profits of £301.3m in the year to May 3 after a strong performance overseas helped compensate for a tough year on the UK high street.
