Mick Tait's Darlington will be looking for revenge after being drawn against First Division Bradford City in the first round of the newly-sponsored Carling Cup.
The Quakers will play the Bantams at Valley Parade in the week beginning August 11 - after just one game of the new season - and bad memories will come flooding back of a September night almost three years ago.
An inexperienced Darlington side were beaten 7-2 by Bradford - meaning an 8-2 aggregate defeat - and their cup run came to an abrupt end.
Meanwhile, the reality of relegation from the Premiership hit home at Sunderland last night when they were drawn away to Mansfield Town.
The Black Cats joined the other 72 Nationwide League sides in the hat and now they are facing up to a tricky cup-tie against the Stags at Field Mill. Sunderland reached the fourth round of the League Cup last season, when they were defeated by semi-finalists Sheffield United 2-0 at Bramall Lane.
Mick McCarthy's men will now be hoping to avoid a slip-up so early in the season, but Mansfield boss Keith Curle knows who he would back if he were a betting man.
"They are the favourites, but for our purposes it will be a cup final very early in the season," said the former Manchester City skipper.
Sunderland enjoyed a shock 3-2 win over Arsenal - Peter Reid's last game in charge - last year in the competition and that was followed by a 7-0 hammering of Cambridge United before going out to the Blades.
Other matches to look out for are those fixtures to be played by West Ham United and West Brom.
Both followed Sunderland through the Natiowide League trapdoor in May and, like the Wearsiders, are now preparing to enter the competition early.
West Ham will be at home to Third Division champions Rushden & Diamonds, while Brentford will travel to The Hawthorns.
Last season's beaten semi-finalists Sheffield United have been handed an away tie at Macclesfield.
And Football League new-boys Yeovil and Doncaster will make their debuts at Luton, where former Hartlepool boss Mike Newell has been installed as manager, and at home to Grimsby respectively.
First-round draw: Huddersfield v Derby, Rotherham v York, Crewe v Wrexham, Doncaster v Grimsby, Chesterfield v Burnley, Sheff Wed v Hartlepool, Macclesfield v Sheff Utd, Stoke v Rochdale, Tranmere v Bury, Scunthorpe v Oldham, Walsall v Carlisle, Bradford v Darlington, Port Vale v Nottm Forest, Barnsley v Blackpool, Preston v Notts County, Wigan v Hull, Lincoln v Stockport, Mansfield v Sunderland, Coventry v Peterborough, Wycombe v Wimbledon, Colchester v Plymouth, Ipswich v Kidderminster, Millwall v Oxford Utd, Cambridge Utd v Gillingham, Bristol City v Swansea, Watford v Bournemouth, Southend v Swindon, Boston Utd v Reading, Luton v Yeovil, Bristol Rovers v Brighton & Hove Albion, West Brom v Brentford, Cheltenham v QPR, Cardiff v Leyton Orient, West Ham v Rushden & Diamonds, Northampton v Norwich, Torquay v Crystal Palace.
