POLICE have appealed for help after a child was seen struggling as she was being put into a pick-up yesterday.
The incident was seen at 9.30am in a layby on the southbound carriageway of the A19, between Houghton-le-Spring and Sunderland.
There are no more details about the vehicle, but the man was believed to have been wearing dark clothing. The girl, who was in a distressed state, had blonde hair and was aged between five and six years.
Police said they were keeping an open mind as to what may have happened.
Detective Sergeant Peter Bent of Washington CID said: "We would appeal to anyone who may have seen this incident to contact us - or anyone who thinks they may have been the driver concerned."
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Constable Chris Drew on 0191-454 7555, extension 66548.
