Darlington chairman George Reynolds last night revealed the club's ambitious plans to bring a high-profile striker to the Reynolds Arena.

Reynolds is keen to keep the identity under wraps, especially after seeing the collapse of his audacious bid to land Colombian star Faustino Asprilla last season.

The former Newcastle striker was on the verge of joining the club until a last-minute change of heart saw the deal dramatically fall through.

"I have my eye on a striker but I don't want to make an announcement in case it goes sour on me like the Asprilla deal did," said Reynolds.

"All I can say is that if we manage to get him our fans will be doing cartwheels!"

Quakers fans have became increasingly frustrated by the lack of activity in the transfer market.

The club have already failed in their attempt to land Tom Newey and Sam Aiston, while the expected loss of defender Stuart Whitehead to Nationwide Conference side Telford United has left some fans questioning the club's ambitions and Reynolds' promise that the club is going "flat out" next season.

But Reynolds will be hoping that the addition of a star name will help the club move forward in the new 27,500 all-seater stadium.

"I can understand the fans' frustration but we are doing all we can to do what's best for the club," said Reynolds.

"He's a player who will guarantee us 20 goals a season and I reckon if we match him up with Barry Conlon we'll do very well next season."

Reynolds has also been quick to stress that their approach for the marksman is not part of a plan to increase season ticket sales.

"If it goes sour people just fob it off as a publicity stunt, especially at this time of year when clubs are keen to sell season tickets.

"So this time around we're keeping it under wraps until we know for certain," he said.

* Darlington have confirmed two more fixtures for their pre-season schedule. Quakers will travel to Scottish Division One outfit Queen of the South on July 23, followed by a trip to Barrow on August 2.
