RAF pilot Steve Kenworthy flew back to the North-East yesterday to help launch this year's Sunderland International Air Show.

Teesside Airport laid on a VIP reception for Flight Lieutenant Kenworthy, who arrived in a Hawk trainer jet, at the official launch of the flying extravaganza.

He was presented with a framed picture of HMS Ocean - the Royal Navy's largest warship that will be guest of honour at the show, which takes place on July 26 and 27.

HMS Ocean, which is Sunderland's adopted warship, will be anchored between Roker and Seaburn on both days.

Flt Lt Kenworthy was educated at Laurence Jackson School and Prior Pursglove Sixth Form College, in Guisborough, east Cleveland.

He moved from his native North-East to study at the University of Bristol before joining the RAF in 1998.

Celebrating his first season as a Hawk display pilot, Flt Lt Kenworthy said: "It'll be a fantastic feeling to be performing in the region, and I am sure there will be a lot of my family and friends turning up."

Officials promised an action-packed programme with events on land, sea and in the skies to help make this year's show the biggest free event in Europe.

Crowds will be able to see helicopters take off and land on Ocean's huge flight deck.

The ship's new Captain, Chris Clayton, said: "We are delighted to be able to bring Ocean for a visit to Sunderland to thank everyone for their support.

"It is made extra special that we are able to take an active role in the celebrations for the 15th Sunderland International Air Show."

As part of the official visit, the public will be allowed on board the vessel on Tuesday, July 29, at Corporation Quay.

Airshow coordinator Sue Henderson said: "It is something we have been trying to arrange since 1998 and it is fitting that they can finally come and take part in our 15-year celebrations."

The flying programme includes the Red Arrows, which will open the show, on Saturday and close proceedings on the Sunday.

Adding an international flavour to the event will be the Royal Netherlands Air Force F16 and PC7, the Belgian Air Force F16 and Alpha Jet, and the Royal Jordanian Falcons.

In addition, old favourites will be back, including the Tornado, Nimrod, Tucano, Merlin helicopter, the Falcons Parachute Team, the Blue Eagles Display Team and the Dakota, Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Not all the action is confined to the air and a full arena programme has been planned. There will also be extensive displays, exhibitions and entertainment areas throughout the show site.

Organised by Sunderland City Council, the event runs from 10am to 6pm on both days, with the flying programme taking place between 1pm and 4pm.
