A shopping development's flagship store welcomed its first customers after its official opening yesterday.
The Marks and Spencer outlet was launched with a ribbon cutting ceremony at Dalton Park, in Murton, County Durham.
The 6,500sq ft store is the latest to open at the retail development, offering designer clothes, household goods and other items at reduced prices.
Stocking last season's clothing for men, women and children, along with household items, footwear, lingerie and beauty products, the store offers discounts of up to 70 per cent.
Within minutes of opening, it was packed with shoppers eager to snap up bargains.
As part of the celebrations, customers were invited to take advantage of free children's face painting and extra discounts on selected products.
Manager Mary Scurfield, who also manages the Marks and Spencer outlet at Royal Quays, North Shields, said she was not surprised by the response.
"It's what I expected," she said. "I think it's so popular because of the name."
She added that she was delighted that the store had opened at Dalton Park.
"I think it's an absolutely fantastic centre. We've got some excellent brands and the obvious support of local people."
The next big name store to arrive at the development will be Next, due to open in August.
The Marks and Spencer store is open from 10am to 6pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10am to 8pm on Thursday, and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.
