A RETIRED police superintendent whose 35-year-long "beat" covered most of County Durham has died aged 71.
Shildon-born Colin Neal was assistant divisional commander at Darlington when he left the force in 1987.
He joined the police cadets in 1948, taking a break for Army service in 1950 before starting as a constable in 1952. His postings included Bishop Auckland, Wolsingham, Chester-le-Street, Stanley, Spennymoor, Harperley Hall, Newton Aycliffe and Durham.
He achieved long service and good conduct medals and received two Chief Constables commendations.
The first, in 1958, was for his role in rescuing a boy trapped in a disused quarry. Four years later he was commended by the Chief Constable and magistrates for his diligence and perseverance in solving a car crime.
Mr Neal lived in Shildon with his wife, Joyce. He leaves two sons, Kelvin and Richard, and a daughter, Kathryn.
A funeral service will be held at 11am today in Shildon Methodist Church.
