A VILLAGE school has been awarded a coveted Artsmark Gold Award.
Hamsteels Primary School in Esh Winning, Derwentside, County Durham, was recognised for its work from drama to music, design to literature, dance to sculpture.
Headteacher Jane McGuire said: "The governors, my staff and I are thrilled that the Arts Council has recognised the school's commitment to the arts.
"Pupils in our school access a broad and balanced art curriculum in which there are opportunities to work with local artists.
Large pieces of work were displayed in the children's exhibition in the DLI Museum.
Arts Council chief executive Peter Hewitt said: "Now in its third year, Artsmark continues to go from strength to strength.
"Our belief is that the arts have power to transform lives, and that dynamic arts experiences offered by schools have a lasting impact on young children."
The school has also succeeded, for the third year, to get the DFES School Achievement for its results in Key Stage 2 Sats in 2002.
