Youngsters about to enter the post-16 stage of their education have been invited to spend a day at Middlesbrough's Macmillan College on Wednesday, July 9, where they will be given the chance to meet two international sports stars and view the facilities on offer.
Former British Lions' winger John Bentley will be joined by Olympic athlete Alison Curbishley. Any boys wishing to take part are asked to take along boots, trainers and rugby kit, while girls need trainers and PE kit. Places on the day are limited, and anyone wishing to take part needs to contact the school on (01642) 353029.
STAYING ON: Middlesbrough councillor Ken Walker is looking forward to another year of working with local law enforcers after being re-appointed chairman of Cleveland Police Authority. He is the longest-serving member of the authority, having joined in 1985 and become chairman eight years ago. Local magistrate member Ted Cox JP was re-elected vice-chairman.
CYCLE SUCCESS: The second annual weekend of walking and cycling activities in east Cleveland has been hailed a success. A total of 170 people took part in the Nevisport Walking and Cycling Festival. A raffle at the Fox and Hounds, in Slapewath, during the festival raised £130 for Cleveland Search and Rescue Team. The event was organised by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
DIABETES CONCERNS: Diabetes nurse Sister Mary Bilous will answer questions on diabetes and pregnancy at the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, at 7pm, on Tuesday. The talk is in aid of the South Cleveland Diabetic (Voluntary Group) funds.
BRASS SHOW: Tees Valley Youth Brass Band is playing a selection of songs from shows at the Ian Ramsey School, Greens Lane, Stockton, on Monday, July 7, at 7.30pm.
SHOPMOBILITY LAUNCH: A Shopmobility service is to be launched in Redcar, on Tuesday, with a range of three and four-wheeled scooters, motorised and manual wheelchairs and walking aids available. The office at Pybus Place, on the Esplanade, will be open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 11am to 3pm on Sundays. There will be a £10 annual membership fee and a £1 hire charge per three-hour session. Non-members pay £1 an hour.
