TIME TEAM presenter Carenza Lewis joined archaeologists in the North-East yesterday as they searched for the remnants of Captain Cook's birthplace.

The Channel 4 team has been searching for the remains of the village of East Marton, which once stood in the present day Stewart Park, in Marton, Middlesbrough.

So far, they have unearthed cobbled surfaces which could be parts of buildings, a track made from rubble and stone.

The team was particularly excited when pottery, clay pipes and coins, which all come from around Cook's era, were unearthed

"The history of Cook is so exciting and it would be the most fantastic place to come back to and perhaps do a full three-day Time Team on it," said Ms Lewis.

The TV show's team came to the region as part of the Big Dig, which has been going on nationwide over the past week encouraging people to dig in their own back gardens.

Ms Lewis said: "It's fantastic seeing all the kids from the area having a go at arch-aeology and having a chance to feel and touch it for themselves."

The dig will continue until tomorrow afternoon and a further excavation will take place during the celebration later this year of the 275th anniversary of Cook's birth. Events will run from October 17 to November 3.
