Worthington CIU Team Knock Out: Tow Law A from the Third Division created the shock of the First Round when they travelled to Newhouse and beat the second placed team in the First Division by 46 points.

The Lawyers received 59 points start but lost the first two frames when Dog Watson went down by six to Ronnie Pearson and Charlie Donaghy went down by twenty-four to Ian Dinsdale. However the visitors were rescued in the next two frames when Tommy Williams played a captain's part to beat Kevin Allison by twenty-seven points and Stephen Laing pulled off a six points victory over John Maddox. This left the Heppell Hodgson taking a sixty-two points lead into the final frame against Paul Wright. The Newhouse man got too close for the Lawyers comfort but, just when it seemed he was in with a chance a double kiss gave Hodgson the chance he needed to clinch victory, even though he lost the frame by sixteen points.

Leeholme A were another Third Division team to oust First Division opponents when they beat the visiting Witton Gilbert. The home side received ninety-two points start with Barry Shaw extending this by fifty-seven after he won the first frame. Paul Nord and Malcolm Peart won close frames for Witton. John Rooney senior gave the visitors a boost with a 42 break but this only reduced the arrears to sixty-nine with one frame left. Ian Renwick put up a sterling fight for the visitors but Carl Brown did enough to ensure a Leeholme victory.

Spennymoor B from the Second Division pulled off a brilliant home win over the visiting Wheatley Hill A from the First Division. The Moors received sixty-six start but lost the first frame by six points when Alan Hall won for the Hill. Phil Wilson and Wayne Parry won vital frames for the Moors to establish a lead of one hundred and six points but Dave Walker replied with a win of fifty-six points for the Hill. This left Alan Rowell with fifty points start over John Worthington of Wheatley Hill and he did enough to win by four points to take the Moors through.

Third Division, Leeholme B pulled off a good away win over Langley Park from the Second Division on the final pink of the match. The visitors received one hundred and forty start with Ray Coates reducing this start by 33 after the first frame. Good performances by Lee Todd and Mark Brown against the home side's Robert Roche and Stephen Coates only reduced the visitors' lead to 99 points despite the Park winning both frames. Kevin Keers raised the Park's hopes when he won the fourth frame by sixty points to send Peter Morgan into the last with a thirty-nine points deficit against Anthony Prest. Morgan clawed his way back into the match but was just beaten when Prest took the final pink.

Second Division leaders, Meadowfield pulled off a very good away win at First Division Fishburn A, so often the winners of this competition. The visitors had 16 points start with Craig Hughes extending this by 43 after the first frame. Charlie Hirst pulled Fishburn into the lead with a win by fifty-nine points in the second frame. The next two frames were almost evened out when Martin Halliday won by four points for Meadowfield and Wayne Oliver won by three points for Fishburn. In the decider Alan Buist had eight points start for Fishburn against Norman Smith. The frame went to the final black, which Smith potted to give Meadowfield and eight points victory.

Wheatley Hill B from the Second Division beat First Division vistors' from Shotton Palms by 46 points after they had frame wins from Jock Frost, Dave Blyth with a 33 break and Steve Cave, whilst the Palms replied with wins fromDave Swindle and Jimmy Evans senior.

Neil Spender took the only frame for Ferryhill as they tried to push a 43 points start into a win against the visiting Brandon. However they failed when John Hall, John Middleton, Kevin Sample and Colin Goodrick won for the First Division visitors.

Newton Aycliffe gave away 36 points start to the visiting new Durham but Mark Howe mad a brilliant opening for the home side with a 49 break to push his team twenty points ahead. Simon Tweddle, Michael Hewitt and Bill Barrigan followed with home wins, leaving Richie Young with a lead of one hundred points into the final frame against Tony Thompson. Thompson put in a 35 break but never stood a chance of closing the gap.

Sherburn Village had a comfortable win over the visiting Stanley Central, severely weakened by holidays after Albert Bower won the first frame by 96 points to wipe out the visitors' 37 start. Harold Grimes and Jim Dufton won the next two frames for the Central but John Bower and Scott mallaburn replied for Sherburn to go through.

Crowtrees beat the visiting Fishburn B by over one hundred points after they took the first four frames through Martin Wolf, Keith McLauchlan, Sonny Hann and Peter Laverick. Winston Hodgson took the final frame for the visitors but by then the match was lost.

Tow Law B received 86 points start from the visiting Willington from the First Division. However, after the first three frames the match was virtually over as Jeremy Martin, Stan Bennett and Arthur Goldsborough with a 33 break move the visitors ninety-five points ahead.

South West Durham Association

Newton Aycliffe Southerne Club held the visiting First Division leaders, Bishop Auckland Golf Club to a draw. Ian Halford starred for the home side with a 50 break, whilst Andrew Aisbitt put in a 33 break for the golfers. This draw for the Golf Club allowed Darlington Cricket Club B the chance to close the gap at the top to one point after they beat the visiting Darlington Snooker Club A by two points. Jeff Stiff put in a 47 break for the cricketers, who have a nine points advantage over their nearest rivals.
