AN annual steam festival in Weardale at the weekend held a special significance this year.

The Weardale Railway Steam and Transport Festival, which took place in Stanhope throughout the weekend, marked the 50th anniversary of the last passenger train to travel on the Weardale Railway.

Enthusiasts have formed the Weardale Railway Project and are battling to get the line re-opened.

The weekend event gave visitors a glimpse of the past.

The festival, on Bondisle Field, offered a host of attractions for steam enthusiasts.

The event featured vintage cars, motorbikes and trucks, fairground organs, steamrollers and miniature engines.

Entertainment was provided by the Lone Star western history group, who re-enacted the gunfight at the OK Corral.
