DOG owners in Middlesbrough are being warned they face a £50 on-the-spot fine if they allow their pet to foul in public places.

The warning from Middlesbrough Council coincides with National Poop Scoop week, which starts today, to encourage people to clear up after their pets.

"Those people who don't heed this warning and are caught can count on community protection staff to take legal action against them," said Jim Granville, the council's animal control and licensing officer.

"Dog fouling will continue to be an enforcement policy in Middlesbrough because it is anti-social, unpleasant and easily avoidable.

"Everyone should carry a poop scoop when walking their dog and should never let their dog out on its own."

Environmental health staff have issued 12 fixed penalty notices to dog owners this year. Anyone who does not pay the fine faces a court appearance and a maximum fine of £1,000.

The council has teamed up with the National Canine Defence League (NCDL) to promote the use of poop scoops and will be giving them away in the town's parks during this week.

Owners can have their pets micro-chipped free in Albert Park, near the fountain, from 10am to 2pm.

An extensive micro-chipping campaign that has been carried out with the NCDL over the past four years has led to a 23 per cent reduction in the number of complaints about dog fouling.
