MIDDLESBROUGH MP Ashok Kumar met people campaigning for world justice and fair trade at a family fun day in Guisborough at the weekend.
They asked him to support their cause, before the World Trade Organisation's ministerial meeting in Mexico later this summer.
Dr Kumar, MP for Middlesbrough South and east Cleveland, said: "I agree with many of the points they make. The world trade system is still biased towards the interests of wealthier nations, whose financial power and muscle give them the ability to dictate trade terms to the poorest countries in the world.
"But having said that, my Government has, I firmly believe, led the world in terms of making sure that the less well-developed nations are not unduly disadvantaged by the big boys in world trade negotiations."
Dr Kumar said the Government had introduced initiatives to ensure developing nations were given a fair chance to develop.
They have sponsored training for delegates from the developing world who attend meetings of organisations such as the G8 and the World Trade Organisation.
Dr Kumar said: "I believe we in the UK have a track-record in achieving results through this approach, but I know that there is a lot more to be done."
