CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a bus and car park at Richmond School will be the subject of an open meeting at the school on July 15.

Residents will have the chance to put their views to planning officers from North Yorkshire County Council on the plans which would create spaces for an extra 16 buses and seven cars on land surrounding the youth club in Darlington Road.

On June 10, the planning application was deferred until July 29 for further consideration by county councillors.

As a result of objections from residents, district and town councils and other bodies, planning officers have agreed to call a public meeting.

Officers are supporting the application by Richmond School and the county education director on the grounds that it will improve traffic flow management and create a better and safer environment for students. Objectors say no evidence has been produced to suggest students are endangered by existing arrangements or that new arrangements will make the claimed improvements.

They also say the development contravenes the county's policy of encouraging pedestrians rather than vehicles and goes against district and town council policies of preserving open green spaces.

The meeting begins at 6pm.
