YOUNG scientists proved their capabilities when they took part in a national project.
Children from Newker Primary School, in Chester-le-Street, took the Science Challenge 2003 in Manchester, organised by the Association for Science Education.
The nine and ten-year-olds won the chance to take part in the fun day after solving a scientific problem, which involved helping a family of worms move to soil with more air.
Their solutions, displayed in a poster with illustrations, tables and a graph, earned them a place on the trip to Salford University.
Once there, they had to stage a drama based on their competition entry, take part in a quiz against other primary schools and complete experiments.
They came joint first, but narrowly missed out on a place in the grand final at Imperial College, London, when the judges reviewed the scores.
