A PROJECT has begun to help children whose mothers are fleeing domestic violence.
Derwentside Young Carers, in Stanley, is to train volunteers in listening skills and counselling on separation, loss and bereavement.
The Scarman Trust has donated £1,500 to pay for the training.
Derwentside Young Carers, run by children's charity Barnado's, works with children who care for a sick or disabled relative, or who have suffered the death of a close relative.
Helen Hodder, of Barnado's, said: "In a lot of cases, children are caring for their mums in these situations and providing emotional support to them when they flee domestic violence.
"But these children need emotional support too. Leaving the family home and the family breaking up can be almost like bereavement for these children and our aim is to train volunteers to provide a service to them."
Training starts in September. Potential volunteers are asked to call (01207) 283585.
