A FACTORY is helping to encourage excellence among primary schoolchildren in the area by presenting their schools with awards.

Eleven primary schools in the town have been presented with trophies or other awards of their choosing by 3M Aycliffe, in Newton Aycliffe, to use as an incentive for their pupils.

Stephenson Way Primary School received a trophy to be presented each week to the class that had had the best attendance record.

Headteacher Barry Dobson said: "It means that every class has the opportunity to win the trophy and it's a great encouragement for the children to make sure they keep up a good attendance."

Mike Simpson, of 3M Aycliffe, presented the awards to the schools on behalf of the company.

He said: "The aim is to help promote and recognise excellence among our local schools.

"Nine schools chose trophies, while one preferred a presentation clock and another selected book tokens for 13 pupils who had achieved excellent Sats results."
