A LAST-ditch attempt by a gambling firm to open a controversial amusement arcade in Darlington has been successful.

Count Cash, of Middlesbrough, had twice tried and failed to get planning permission to convert a former Cockerton Green caf into an arcade in the face of overwhelming local opposition.

The borough council's planning committee had refused the application twice after a 1,000-name petition had been submitted by Cockerton residents, churches and schools.

But this week it was revealed that following an appeal against the decision by Alan Fulton, of Count Cash, the planning inspector overturned Darlington Borough Council's planning committee's decision and approved the plan.

A council spokesman said last night: "I can confirm that the company has been successful in its appeal against the council's decision."

More than 50 protestors had attended a planning meeting in January when councillors voted against the arcade.

Church leaders, business owners and teachers in Cockerton had protested over fears the arcade would have on youngsters.

Residents believe it will lead to a rise in crime, particularly graffiti and vandalism, as well as truancy among school pupils, with three secondary schools within walking distance of Cockerton.

Headteachers at Branksome Comprehensive, Cockerton CE, Holy Family RC and Alderman Leach primary schools had objected to the facility, saying it would have a detrimental effect on the community.

Count Cash said the arcade would be strictly for people aged over 18, and estimated that the majority of its customers would be aged over 50.
