A NORTH auctioneer has broken its £1m target for its summer sale.

Bidding at the two day International Summer Catalogue Sale at Tennants in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, was brisk with the piece de resistance an oil painting that sold for £52,000.

Auctioneer spokesperson Debbie Brack said it was a successful event with the sale of the Heywood Hardy painting of the huntsmen far exceeding its estimate of between £12,000 and £18,000.

The sale of items including art, furniture, jewellery and models, saw many lots selling for more than their catalogue estimate prices.

Silver and jewellery consultant Susan Rumfitt estimated a pair of George III nutmeg graters at £150 and £300, but they went for £880 and £1,300.
