THE decision to delay road safety action near a school has angered a former mayor.
North Yorkshire county councillors voted by eight votes to seven that no action should be taken over a calming scheme near Greystones School, in Quarry Moor Lane, Ripon, including a 20mph zone and road bumps.
But they agreed to consult the public on alternatives after a debate at the county council's Harrogate area committee meeting.
The decision angered Councillor Bernard Bateman, a former city mayor and Ripon county councillor, who said: "I hope there is not an accident in the meantime because it will be on the heads of those who have voted against it."
Ripon councillor Peter Horton said there had been overwhelming opposition to road bumps and although he was in complete agreement about reducing traffic speed, he did not agree with the proposed solutions.
