A POLICE operation has taken place to stop off-road motorcyclists causing a nuisance to residents in Stockton.
Operation Green Belt last week resulted in five youths receiving warnings under the Public Nuisance Act and one being arrested for failing to stop. A stolen scooter was recovered at a petrol station in Cannon Park, Middlesbrough, and another suspected stolen motorcycle was seized.
The operation was carried out in the Port Clarence, Primrose Hill, Hardwick and Great North Park areas of the town.
Acting Superintendent Ray Morton, of Stockton Police, said: "Police are working closely with the countryside wardens to ensure residents can enjoy the area, and to prevent damage being caused by these motorcyclists who are causing such a nuisance and eroding the countryside.
"We receive many complaints about the manner in which these youths are riding the motorcycles from local residents and many of them are unroadworthy or stolen vehicles without insurance."
The operation will be continuing with help from the Police Community Support Officers who will be patrolling the areas. They will also be using their powers under the Police Reform Act to seize and take away motorbikes causing such annoyance.
