MORE than 100 teenagers were being given a flavour of further education this week as the University of Teesside hosted a higher education summer school.

Pupils aged 15 and 16, from 39 secondary schools across the North-East, who are awaiting their GCSE results next month, are working with student mentors on activities from the university's six academic schools.

They are exploring subjects including health, computing and youth studies, and also live as students by spending each night in the halls of residence, and visit the university's careers service.

They can also enjoy bowling and cinema visits, a quiz night, masked ball and formal dinner.

Organiser Sharon Bimson said: "We've tailored the week for students who are less familiar with higher education.

"Students will certainly not have time to get bored."
