Hastings Direct Tour: Wearsider Adam Barratclough was the best performer from the region on the British circuit tournament in Frinton.
This national standard player reached the semi-finals, unseeded, after disposing of two higher ranked seeds. These were Kenya's Alan Cooper (5) and England's Guy Thomas (3); but the second seed Jim May, placed 30 in the British order of merit, stopped him in the last four.
Teessider Lynsey Davison could not repeat her success of the previous week when she reached a final, in going out to Rebecca Llewellyn of Wales who beat her then, in the first round this time in Frinton.
Frinton results, men's singles: Final: Ross Hutchins (Sur) beat Jim May (Ke) 7-6 3-6 6-1. Semi-finals: Hutchins beat T Greenland (Oxf) 6-2 6-2; May beat Adam Barrstclough (D&C) 6-3 6-4. Quarter-finals: Hutchins beat J Baker (Ke); Greenland beat D Corrie (Ber); Barratclough beat A Cooper (Ken) 7-5 6-3; May beat R Green (Ber). Round Two: Barratclough beat G Thomas 6-4 6-4.
Women's singles: Final: M Falcon (USA) beat R Llewellyn (Wal) 6-2 6-4. Round One: Llewellyn beat Lynsey Davison (D&C) 7-6 6-3.
Derwentsider Daniel Kiernan, the Durham and Cleveland Number One has climbed to 18th in the British Order of Merit from world ranking of 752. This is his best ever position and represents a huge leap from the 1352 only a month ago.
In the meantime also, he has broken into 10th place in the national doubles list (550 in the world) largely due to his recent achievement with Yorkshire's David Sherwood in making runners up in the West of England Challenger in Bristol.
Sarah Borwell, the USA-based Tennis World player, has maintained her British ninth place with a world ranking now of 392.
Men's Division One North
Tennis World have survived in the top division of the NCL. Their status was in doubt until the very last fixtures were completed, but results went their way and they finished fifth of eight teams. They achieved two wins only though, but did better than two Lancashire clubs and another club at the bottom which defaulted.
