Sunderland were competing at the Telford tournament at the weekend in both the U16 and U19 events. There were four teams in each age group and Sunderland finished in third in both events.

In the U16 event Sunderland Arrows started with a 6-1 defeat at the hands of hosts Telford Rockets. Arrows' second match was against Bradford Pirates which they won.

Bradford had a 1-0 lead after the first period. Ben Connon tied the scores and Dean Holland striking the winning goal in a 2-1 victory.

Basingstoke Bison were next opponents for Arrows and they came away 3-0 winners. Bison conceded only one goal throughout the tournament which they won 2-1 with both goals coming in the final 90 seconds.

A third place finish in the group meant Arrows having Telford as opponents in the semi-finals. Rockets once again were winners but much closer by a 5-3 margin.

Bradford finished behind Arrows and therefore met Basingstoke in the other semi which Bison won 5-0.

Another close encounter between Sunderland and Bradford, which was decided midway through the final period when Holland on a breakaway, fied the puck into the Pirates' net for a 1-0 win.

Sunderland Tomahawks were involved in a thrilling encounter against Telford Trojans in their opening U19 match. Behind 1-0 after the first period John Westgarth, Paul Shanks and younger brother Darren were on target as Tomahawks drew 3-3.

Next was Milton Keynes Kings and they were also difficult opponents. Michael Allinson and Jonathan Heslop the marksmen as Tomahawks went 2-4 up.

Bristol Boxers gave Tomahawks a 4-1 win, Allison, Heslop, Paul Shanks and Dean Holland got Sunderland's goals.

A third place finish brought Tomahawks up against Telford in the series but a Paul Shanks goal was the only one Tomahawks had to show from a 5-1 loss.

Bristol again faced Tomahawks for the third/fourth play-off which the Wearsiders won 6-0.
