Ryan Riley of Yarm is the 2003 Eaglescliffe golf club champion after finishing four shots ahead of Euan Waller, his nearest rival, in the 36-hole championship decider last week.
Competing against over 40 of the club's top golfers with nine or under handicaps, Ryan, 17, is the second youngest ever champion since the competition began in 1914.
His victory, however, was not without incident. After a nightmare on the 14th par five hole, Ryan knocked his tee shot into the river and including the penalty, was left playing three off the tee. Undeterred, he fought back with a tremendous drive and holed a 50-yard pitch shot that flew under trees and over bunkers to achieve par.
Ryan has only been a member of Eaglescliffe golf club for four years, but already has a golf handicap of just one. He is seeking a sponsor to enable him to move up to the next level and can be contacted on (01642) 780157.
