Show results: Egglescliffe Gardening Club held its annual show on Saturday, July 19, at Egglescliffe CE Primary School.
There were more than 290 entries in 78 classes and the standard of the entries was excellent. The cups and shields were awarded as follows: Cup for best exhibit in show, Mrs U Morgan for gloxinia flowering plant; shield for best handicraft exhibit, Miss K Greenhalgh; shield for best vegetable or fruit, Mr R Rutter for beetroot; shield for best horticultural exhibit in show, Mr D Wilbert for cactus; shield for best fuchsia, Miss K Greenhalgh; shield for best exhibit in home baking, Mrs M McKenna for butterfly cakes; the Morgan cup for best novice, Mr G Cooper; Harrison crystal award for flower arrangement, Mrs V Picken; TMS cup for highest points gained in the show, Mrs McKenna.
MARTIAL ARTS: Aikido is a martial art drawing its effectiveness from the flow of universal energy. Techniques are based on natural movements and harmony of mind and body. Classes take place on Thursdays, from 7.45pm to 8.45pm, at Layfield Community Centre, in Everingham Road. For more details, contact Peter on (01642) 765884. Tae kwon do martial arts classes, including self-defence and fitness, are held in the Yarm Fellowship Hall, West Street on Mondays and Thursdays, from 6pm to 8pm. GOOD DOGS: Dogs can be trained on Thursdays, from 6pm to 7pm, at Egglescliffe Community Centre, Durham Lane, Eaglescliffe. There is basic dog obedience and socialisation and dogs of every breed are welcome. The classes are registered with the kennel club and the leader is qualified through animal care college. HELP NEEDED: Egglescliffe Parish Hall is seeking help to install a new kitchen. It is arriving on Saturday, August 2, and without help it will cost £1,500 to have it fitted. Contact Christine on (01642) 786330 for more details.
COFFEE MORNING: There will be no meetings of the Egglescliffe Mothers' Union in July and August but the annual coffee morning will be held on Tuesday, from 10am at the home of Gill McCarthy, in Mayfield Crescent. For more details, contact branch leader, Gloria Wilson, on (01642) 781680.
CHURCH OPEN: St John's Church, the parish church for Egglescliffe village, will be open every Wednesday, from 2pm to 4pm, throughout July and August.
CHILD MINDING: Ingleby Barwick and Thornaby child-minding group provides child-care in a caring, homely envir-onment for babies and child-ren.
