Q I am 75, looking after my wife, aged 70, who has Disability Living Allowance (DLA) including the higher rate for care. My State pension is £95.95 a week, hers is £46.35. My company pension is £175.57 a month and our savings come to £25,000. Will we be able to get Pension Credit (PC)?
A Not as things stand. But if you claim underlying entitlement to Carer's Allowance, on account of your wife's DLA, your PC claim will be worked out using more generous rules for carers. You will then be due £3 a week.
Q My husband is on Incapacity Benefit (IB) of £72.15 a week. I am 61 with a State Pension of £54.31 a week. Can he claim extra for me?
A No. Extra IB of £43.15 can be claimed for a spouse aged 60 plus, but as your retirement pension is more than this, it will cancel it out.
Q I am a 62 year old divorcee whose only source of income is a State Pension of £87.25 a week plus an ISA and some savings totalling around £12,000. Do I qualify for any benefits?
A You should hardly be paying any rent or Council Tax at all. You will get a considerable amount of Pension Credit too, but not until you are 65.
Q I have a State Pension of £82.05 a week and a works pension of £199 a month. I have some savings. Would these be taken into account if I claimed Pension Credit?
A Yes. If your savings are under £6,000 you would get about £4 a week. Otherwise you could still qualify for something with savings up to £11,500.
Q My father has a weekly state income of £144.75 including Attendance Allowance of £57.20 plus a monthly private pension of £208.10. My mother has a State Pension of £49.57 a week. Their council tax after benefits is £29 a month. Is this right?
A As things stand, yes. But if your mother claims underlying entitlement to Carer's Allowance, they could get a further £5 a week deduction.
