A Darlington pensioner has won an award for being one of a national charity's longest-serving volunteers.
Elsie Wylie, 78, who has been a volunteer for Nightstop in Darlington for the last ten years, picked up her award in Newcastle last night.
There are currently over 40 Nightstop schemes across the UK, which offer safe beds for the night for young people living rough.
The Darlington branch was opened in 1993 by Darlington MP Alan Milburn and continues to provide a one-night stop to young people in the area.
Co-ordinator Michelle Frewin said research had shown that even one night in a home can help prevent young people turning to crime or drugs.
Nightstop Darlington is appealing for more volunteers to become hosts.
Ms Frewin said: "Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer will go through a police check and also get comprehensive training so they can confidently handle young people who might come to them. Most volunteers take in around 15 young people a year."
Darlington Nightstop has 10 volunteer places available for its next training programme in August 2003.
