HAMBLETON'S planning service has been ranked one of the best in the country following an independent report by the Audit Commission.

The report classed the district council's planning policy, development control and building control services as good, with excellent prospects to improve further.

The news has been met with delight among councillors, who said it reflects a lot of hard work and commitment.

Council spokesman on planning Councillor John Morley said: "Planning can be a very emotive subject and one where you cannot please everyone all the time.

"Whilst proud to have received this recognition, we realise that there is still work to be done to improve further to ensure that the service continues to be more responsive to our customers' needs."

The rating given the department by the Audit Commission means that Hambleton is ranked in an elite group of ten authorities in the country with a similar rating.
